Clinch Training

Clinch SparringAlthough Wing Chun is seen the world over as a 'Close Range' Fighting system the fact it operates in what is seen as clinch range by most other systems (especially those who fight such as Muay Thai & MMA) is often overlooked.

At Cyclone Wing Chun we incorporate modern MMA clinch drills using a solid Wing Chun structural base as the foundation for this incredibly important area. Once the basics are learned the many clinch skills of the Wing Chun system are introduced including Chin Na control. Take downs and submission holds from these positions are also learned aswell as the ability to use the clinch to great advantage in striking. I would term Wing Chun as "the Original dirty boxing system"

Clinch Sparring
The ability to hold structure, avoid being taken down and survive the rough and tumble of a fight is absolutely paramount if a good level of skill is to be achieved. Clinch sparring is a great way of introducing this without the risk of serious injury. For more advanced students striking from the clinch is introduced including knee strikes.  4oz MMA gloves are usually employed for this style of sparring. The physical battle of the clinch is great preparation for the disorientation that can occur in a fight and the abilty to improvise or recover a strong position after being unbalanced is reinforced here. Non CSL practitioners would be forgiven for thinking we are simply wrestling (and indeed we have no problem in utilising wrestling drills) but skills and structural base learned in our Wing Chun form are used and taught here throughout.
