Loose Cannons Show Sat 25th

Two of our young fighters Andy Massey and Andy Corbett Fought at local event Loose Cannons “Collision Course” last weekend (Saturday 25th). The two guys are some of our most dedicated students and have trained hard being some of the most regular attendees at the club training in Boxing, Jiu Jitsu and MMA.

Andy Massey Versus Kevin Gilroy (Team Shotokai) Amatuer MMA

Cyclone Fighter Andy Massey

Andy's Night

Andy Massey was first up fighting Kevin Gilroy from Team Shotokai.  The dude was pretty big and a soldier recently returned from a tour of Afghanistan.  Andy has lost a huge amount of weight since joinning the club and genuinely looked quite small next to this guy. As the Ref brought the lads to the centre of the cage Kevin went or a full on pro wrestling stare down which Andy to his credit completely ignored.  The opening exchange quickly entered the clinch where Andy secured double underhooks and took the fight to the floor however after a brief scramble ended up on his back.  Within a few seconds however it was clear Andy had far superior skill on the floor reversing his man and then working firstly for a kimura and then taking the lads back.  Round 1 ended with KG narrowly escaping an R1 submission.

Round 2 started with a scrapey standup exchange but quickly went to the floor again with Andy turning a judo throw into a double leg.  Normal service resumed and again Andy took the lads back this time successfully completely the rear naked choke and winning in the second round via submission.

All in all a measured excellent performance from young Andy Massey who is far from a one trick pony with some pretty slick boxing skills waiting to be aired in the next couple of years.

Andy Corbett versus Allan White (Faktory Gym) (K1 Interclub Rules)

Handy Andy

Handy Andy

This was fight of the night for me. We had previously agreed Interclub rules with no decisions therefore the fight had to either have a clear winner or would be a held as a draw using 14oz gloves and shin protection.  This was basically because Andy is 16 years old and having only had one previous interclub we thought it was best to protect him against possible injury.

It was always the plan to use our boxing in this fight and to push the pace using footwork and heavy hands. The opening round was a to and fro exchange with Allan having a solid low point kick and Andy scoring better with his hands.  Early in round one Allan scored a sweep after Andy threw a right body kick but shortly after Andy started to find his range.  This was a really entertaining fight with both guys obviously pretty skilled.  Andy managed to score a knock down in round one which I think was from a knee shortly before the bell.

Round two and after a quick brief from his corner (ME!) We saw the fight progress in the same fast paced fashion as the first round. Andy scored a knockdown with a left then a second one (I think after some heavy uppercuts) which ultimately ended the fight via a ref stoppage.

Both fighters had put in a great performance and it was a real boxer versus kicker matchup which I feel was a really entertaining fight for the spectators.
