Want to Start @ Cyclone MMA? READ THIS

THe Cyclone FT

Every week I still get 10 or more emails and calls asking essentially the same questions. I’ve put the beginners guide already on this website but this specifically deals with the MMA question which goes something like…..

“I want to learn the skills for Mixed Martial Arts (or Ultimate Fighting) and was wondering which classes to come to?”

We are going to assume no background knowledge at all here.

Firstly you need three skill sets for MMA

  • Striking
  • Clinch and Wrestling
  • Grappling

On top of that you also need all round fitness and strength training.

Cyclone Boxing – We use two principle methods at Cyclone which is Chu Sau Lei Chinese Boxing and Western Boxing (Pro style).  (See Timetable for Class times) Chinese Boxing employs powerful punching, kicks similar to those in Muay Thai and a clinch boxing skills (dirty boxing) whilst Western Boxing is obviously the indigenous form found in Boxing gyms up and down the country known for its fast combination punching and quick footwork.  The two styles hands are remarkably similar and we benefit from three coaches in these systems.

Clinch & Wrestling – We use three forms here. Chinese Chin Na from the Chu Sau Lei Wing Chun system which is excellent for striking from the clinch. We employ wrestling from both Greco Roman and Freestyle styles and also Judo.  Coaches Alex Wright & Billy Snowdon cover these skills, again see the timetable for details of classes.

Grappling – We primarily use No Gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as our grappling method with elements of wrestling too.  This is obviously an essential skill for MMA.  Our principle class for this is Wednesday evening 6.30 however we do additional work on this during MMA sessions too.

FAQ’s

Which one should I learn first? – If your goal is to gain a generalised level of skill in Mixed Martial Arts then you need to do elements of all three ranges.  However If time is an issue then I would recommend one striking session and one grappling session per week initially.  During your development you may wish to spend more time on one area than another for periods of time which is very common in MMA fighter development.

Do I need to be fit to come to the class? – You will almost certainly get fitter by coming to the classes.  If you are really out of shape then see your GP first or watch a class but generally speaking my advice would be come along and gain fitness as you progress, Rome wasn’t built in a day!

How Much are Classes? – £5 per night or £3 under 18/Unwaged.  We also have monthly options.

Do you have a Fight team? – Yes, We have a young fight team who doing well in MMA competition.

Do you teach kids? – Afraid not, youngest we accept is 14 years.

Do you teach Women? – Of course , we are expanding our classes too which will hopefully appeal to more ladies!
