The age old question of do I need to get fit to do martial arts? And then in turn maybe how fit do I need to be? Seems to be one that forever raises its head especially in the emails I get from prospective students.
Martial Arts or combat sports have a curious balance between strength, stamina and skill alongwith many attributes that are almost entirely mental discipline.
The short answer to “Do I need to get fit to do a martial art?” is “No, you’ll get fit doing one” however if the question was “Will getting fit help my performance of a martial art?” then the answer is categorically YES.
At Cyclone Martial Arts our conditioning sessions have become legendary and we constantly look for new ways to improve our array of weekly circuits, routines and exercises employing many of the routines used by S&C coaches for top fighters and combat athletes arouind the world.
A few points to note:
- Our Strength & Conditioning Circuits are Very Very Tough, they are designed to aid performance in MMA and other combat sports
- we are NOT a fitness club (there is one next door to us!
- we don’t do boxercise or anything similar
- Most of our members lose some weight (often on a nightly basis)
- Most of our members gain some muscle
- We mix up our routines regularly
- We use Kettlebells, skipping ropes, Olympic Rings, Olympic Lifts, free weights, plyometrics, body weight routines, bags and pads regularly.
- If in any doubt about your health please see your GP and watch one of our circuits before attempting one!
