Chinese Boxing or to give it the full title in this context “Chu Sau Lei Family Boxing” is the pugilistic form of Chu Sau Lei Wing Chun. Unlike many Wing Chun forms who only practice the form and certain applications of the form Cyclone Martial Arts and The CAAA practice the full boxing system using modern training methods, equipment and most of all; lots of sparring.
The system is probably closest in application to pre queensbury rules western boxing although it incorporates kicking techniques not unlike those of Muay Thai or San Shou fighters. In addition to this its lower squarer stance andseemless blending of its parent system Wing Chuns’ Dirty boxing make it an ideal striking system for Mixed Martial Arts.
CSL Chinese Boxing has a blend of powerful striking both at long and close range, low base and natural takedown defences making this little known style a real addition to the current MMA blend.
In Mixed Martial Arts or MMA as it is usually known the most commonly seen stand up system is undoubtedly Muay Thai which in terms of its competition format is closest to what is seen in MMA bouts however most Muay Thai practitioners would freely admit Muay Thai also needs adaptation for the different rules set of the stand up phase of MMA. For years many Traditional Wing Chun practitioners used the excuse of boxing gloves to often hide behind a lack of pugilistic skill. The stance, mentality and technical basis of Chu Sau Lei Chinese Boxing is ideally suited to the MMA environment especially considering its extensive use of holding and striking (commonly phrased dirty boxing) it is this that the infamous sticky hands drill in Wing chun seeks to develop sensitivity for.
The original cross trainer of mixed martial artist Bruce Lee based much of his Jeet Kune Do philosiphy on Wing Chun however Chu Sau Lei boxing developed outside of the limelight of the Chinese movie star. Within the CAAA we are slowly beginning to show our system to the MMA world and are gainning the respect of our peers through genuine skill, open mindedness and fighting other systems in the MMA arena just like back in the old days….maybe dig out “Fists of Fury” for a study of how Chinese Boxing developed.
