BJJ/Grappling

October 2, 2009 | MMA Styles, Chinese Boxing, BJJ Newcastle, No Gi Grappling Newcastle, Uncategorized

There are two distinct elements to the grappling styles incorporated at Cyclone Martial Arts that broadly cover the skills needed for competing in MMA or for use in street self defence situations.  Those that cover the clinch and those that deal with fighting from the ground, it is the latter we are covering here (We cover all aspects of stand up clinch fighting within the Chinese Boxing Style & Wing Chun)

The ground fighting style at Cyclone MA is largely based on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu although has many wrestling elements within this.  There are plans to add in a true BJJ class shortly incorporating the Gi however in the main our groundfighting at Cyclone is No Gi Jiu Jitsu which is the main style seen in MMA competitions such as the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championships)

Instructor Alex Wright holds a Blue Belt under Mauricio Gomez however has been training with Dave Harewood (Brown Belt  in the Crezio De Souza BJJ system) for some years now since attaining that grade.

BJJ can often become a consuming martial art in itself with its many technical intricacies and is often described as “human chess” in reference to the strategic battle that goes on between combatents.

Originally we added our No Gi Jiu Jitsu class in for the guys who were interested in fighting in MMA however since we started some of our students have competed in submission wrestling and the group has developed in its own right.

We have regular input from my teacher Dave Harewood and have had the good fortune to have hosted Crezio De Souza too.  Within the Chu Sau Lei Association  in the UK our BJJ top coach is BJJ World Champion Leo Negao.
